A job interview is a competition won by those who are qualified the most, and, those who are willing to be paid the least.

Navigating the New Frontier: Mastering the Virtual Interview

First published on : July 8, 2020

The recent global health situation has undeniably shifted the landscape of job searching. For many, this means venturing back into the job market and embracing new ways of connecting with potential employers. My sincere empathy goes out to everyone navigating these changes.

One significant shift we've observed is the widespread adoption of digital platforms like Zoom, Webex, and Google Meet for conducting interviews. Having experienced the convenience and efficiency of virtual interviews – eliminating the complexities of room bookings, parking, and rigid schedules – it's highly likely that HR departments will continue to favor this method.

Having conducted numerous virtual interviews, I've noticed some recurring areas where candidates often miss crucial details. To help you shine in this digital environment, here are some key considerations:

1. Dress Professionally: Remember that even in a virtual setting, an interviewer meticulously observes every detail within their view. Present the best version of yourself. This means opting for professional attire, not casual "house clothes."

2. Optimize Your Background: Your background should not distract the interviewer from you and your qualifications. Avoid busy areas with foot traffic. If necessary, position yourself with your back against a plain wall. I've encountered interviews with people walking in and out of the frame, and even a candidate sitting in front of a religious altar. Let's keep the focus on the interview itself.

3. Steer Clear of Virtual Backgrounds: While virtual backgrounds might seem like a fun feature, they can be distracting in a professional interview setting. We want to focus on you, not whether you're piloting a spaceship.

4. Prioritize Lighting: Ensure adequate lighting so your face is clearly visible. Micro-expressions are a vital part of communication, and poor lighting can obscure them. You want to appear professional and approachable, not shadowy.

5. Choose Reliable Audio: While wireless earphones offer convenience, they can be prone to connectivity or battery issues. Opt for traditional wired earphones for a stable connection. Avoid large, bulky headphones that can appear distracting.

6. Familiarize Yourself with the Platform: Don't wait until the day of the interview to explore the video conferencing application (e.g., Zoom). Install it beforehand and experiment with its features. Conduct practice sessions with friends or family to become comfortable with the interface and functionalities.

7. Minimize Background Noise: Select a quiet environment free from distractions like children or television. This ensures a professional and focused conversation.

8. Secure a Stable Internet Connection: A reliable and fast internet connection is crucial. Avoid the frustration of lagging video or pixelated images, which can disrupt the interview. We frequently encounter situations where poor connectivity forces us to end the call prematurely.

9. Be Punctual: This remains a fundamental aspect of professionalism, regardless of the interview format.

10. Use a Stable Device: Avoid conducting the interview on a handheld phone, as it can be shaky and go out of focus. Unless you have professional-grade equipment, a laptop or desktop provides a more stable and professional setup.

Bonus Tip: Leverage the tools available in virtual interview platforms. Applications like Zoom and Webex often allow screen sharing. With prior permission, consider using this feature to showcase relevant past work or insights you've gained about the role. This can be a powerful way to impress the interviewer.

Wishing you the very best in your job search! May your efforts be successful.
